Listening to music at work

A study states that half of people report euphoria and other similar emotions while listening to music and that this is due to the release of endorphins, substances that respond to the electrical brain activity that occurs when musical notes enter our emotional stream.

This places us, employees and employers, in the dilemma of whether or not to use music in the work environment.

It has been proven, for example, that in the tobacco factories where the highest quality cigars are rolled manually, the tradition of readings aloud was incorporated since ancient times, to which the transmission of music and soap operas were gradually incorporated.  The point is that the owners discovered that the workers were more productive when they concentrated to listen and at the same time comply with the routine of their work, select the tobacco leaves, chop them, twist them…

But not in all cases the remedy works: if the worker has to attend to several things at the same time, such as a telephone board that rings and rings, for example, the music can be a disturbing element and if it is not to his liking, but still. That is why the decision to use music or not in the work environment must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and to help you I will leave you with the advantages and disadvantages of having arpeggios as a sound background.

Advantages of working with music

  • It is stimulating, it slightly increases heart rate and blood pressure, releasing adrenaline. It is ideal to speed up the pace of work or to combat boredom.
  • Improves mood and makes the day more enjoyable.
  • Well selected, improves concentration and enhances memory.
  • Reduces stress.
  • Increases creativity because it and the musical sense are located in the same brain areas.
  • Helps to alleviate undesirable noises (traffic, conversations…).

Disadvantages of working with music

Listening to music works as one more stimulus to which the brain must pay attention.  Processing many activities at once can precipitate feelings of stress and anxiety.

Music can decrease attention at work and concentration, so tasks that require strong concentration are better done without music.

If the music that is being listened to is contrary to the taste of the listener, it can generate tension and irritation if it is contrary to the taste of the worker.
